Manual or automatic: which should you learn in?

It's one of the first questions we're asked. There's no wrong answer, but there are trade-offs worth knowing.
Learning in an automatic
- Usually fewer lessons needed: no clutch or gears to master.
- Great if you find multitasking stressful, or live somewhere with lots of stop-start traffic.
- Your licence will only cover automatic cars.
Learning in a manual
- Your licence covers both manual and automatic cars.
- Used manual cars are often cheaper to buy.
- Takes a little longer to learn, so budget for a few extra lessons.
Our advice
If you want the widest choice of cars, learn manual. If you want to pass quickly and the car you'll drive is automatic, or more cars become electric (which are all automatic), an automatic licence makes a lot of sense. Not sure? Book a first lesson and we'll talk it through.
