Beating driving test nerves: a calm driver's checklist

Almost everyone is nervous on test day. The goal isn't to feel nothing. It's to stop nerves turning into rushed decisions.
The week before
- Drive the local test area so the roads feel familiar.
- Do a mock test under exam conditions.
- Plan the morning: what you'll eat, when you'll leave, what you'll wear.
On the morning
- Have a warm-up lesson to settle into the car.
- Breathe slowly: four seconds in, four seconds out.
- Bring your provisional licence and theory pass details.
During the test
If you mishear an instruction, just ask the examiner to repeat it. That's allowed. If you think you've made a mistake, don't dwell on it. Many learners pass after making a fault they were sure had failed them.
If it doesn't go to plan
A fail isn't the end. Your examiner's feedback shows exactly what to work on, and many great drivers passed on their second go.
